Rose Wylie was Hastings Contemporary’s first exhibiting artist in 2012. Her inaugural exhibition for what was then the Jerwood Gallery, was also Wylie’s first UK retrospective exhibition. Spanning four decades of her practice, the exhibition celebrated Wylie’s astonishing talent in bringing humour, insight and a fresh appreciation to the simple act of looking.
Wylie’s respect for direct imagery combines a childlike charm with a breadth and diversity of reference points influencing generations of artists today. Born in Hythe, Kent, Wylie studied at Folkestone & Dover School of Art and at the Royal College of Art. Her exhibition in Hastings was closely followed by shows at Tate, Serpentine and across the globe.
